From Customer-Approved CAD to a Custom Acoustic Pod Shell for Japan
Custom pod projects do not always require one supplier to install every electrical, ventilation, fire-safety and interior system. In some projects, the most practical approach is to manufacture an accurate pod shell around an approved interface plan and complete the remaining systems locally.
For this Japan-bound project, MobileX manufactured a customized acoustic pod shell from a STEP/CAD manufacturing model reviewed and approved with the customer. The shell incorporated the agreed structural form, entrance assembly, exterior panel layout, customer-specified cutouts and mounting provisions.
The unit shown in this case study was intentionally supplied as an unfinished shell. Electrical wiring and interfaces, ventilation equipment, fire-safety equipment and the interior fit-out were outside MobileX’s manufacturing scope for this project and were scheduled for completion separately in Japan.

The project requirement
The customer required a pod shell that could accept systems and interior work completed later by local contractors. This meant the project could not be treated as a standard, fully equipped office phone booth.
The manufacturing model needed to define the physical shell, panel relationships, entrance structure and required openings before fabrication began. It also needed to preserve a clear division of responsibility between factory manufacturing and work performed after delivery.
This division of scope is especially important when a buyer has its own local electrical, ventilation, fire-safety or interior contractors.
From approved CAD to manufacturing
The approved STEP/CAD model provided a shared manufacturing reference for the customer and the MobileX engineering and production teams.
It documented the overall shell form, structural and panel relationships, entrance opening and the locations of specified provisions. The model was used to coordinate fabrication, rather than to advertise an imaginary finished interior.
The CAD images in this article are visualizations of the customer-approved manufacturing model. They are not certified engineering drawings, dimensional inspection records, as-built documentation or evidence of a complete installation.
MobileX retained the approved model geometry when preparing the marketing CAD views. No furniture, wiring, ventilation device, fire-safety equipment or interior decoration was added to the model.


Customer-specified cutouts and mounting provisions
The shell included openings and mounting provisions positioned according to the approved project requirements.
These provisions allowed the customer and its local contractors to complete their respective systems after delivery. MobileX manufactured the physical openings and surrounding shell structure; it did not claim responsibility for the equipment subsequently installed into those locations.
The purpose of every visible opening should not be inferred from the photograph alone. Final equipment selection, connection, commissioning and local compliance remained part of the customer’s site-completion scope.
For similar projects, the cutout schedule, mounting locations and division of responsibility should be confirmed before fabrication. Late changes can affect panel manufacture, internal clearances, packaging and installation planning.


What MobileX manufactured
For this project, MobileX’s manufacturing scope included:
- the customized structural pod shell;
- exterior panel and frame assemblies;
- the entrance and door-frame assembly shown in the factory photographs;
- customer-specified cutouts;
- customer-specified mounting provisions;
- factory assembly and visual fit-up checks;
- protective wooden-crate packaging;
- loading for transport.
The factory photographs show the manufactured shell before the customer’s local systems and interior work were completed.

What was completed separately on site
The following work was outside MobileX’s manufacturing scope for this specific project:
- electrical wiring and electrical connections;
- sockets, interfaces and related electrical equipment;
- ventilation equipment and controls;
- fire-safety equipment and fire extinguishers;
- interior wall and ceiling finishes;
- furniture and interior accessories;
- final local installation and commissioning;
- confirmation of local regulatory compliance.
This responsibility boundary does not mean that every MobileX project has the same scope. It means that the manufacturing and installation scope can be divided according to the buyer’s project plan.
Buyers who require a more complete office booth can review the standard office phone booth range. Custom projects should be evaluated separately.
Factory assembly and visual verification
Before packaging, the shell was assembled and photographed from multiple angles.
The factory photographs document:
- the entrance and door-frame structure;
- the exterior panel surfaces;
- the unfinished interior condition;
- the ceiling and panel openings;
- the physical relationship between the manufactured shell and the approved CAD model.
These images are manufacturing-stage records. They do not show the final Japanese interior, completed ventilation system, finished electrical system or commissioned fire-safety configuration.
No acoustic rating is claimed from these photographs. A visual comparison between CAD and the factory-built shell cannot replace a controlled acoustic test or an as-built inspection.
Protective packaging and dispatch
After the manufacturing-stage checks, the pod components were prepared in protective wooden crates.
The authentic loading photographs show the crates positioned inside a transport vehicle. The photographs document packaging and loading only; they do not claim final delivery, installation or commissioning in Japan.


For international custom projects, packaging must be planned alongside component dimensions, handling requirements and the buyer’s unloading conditions. Packaging is part of the delivery process, but it is not evidence that site installation has been completed.
Why the division of responsibility matters
International pod projects often involve several parties:
- the shell manufacturer;
- the buyer or project owner;
- electrical contractors;
- ventilation contractors;
- fire-safety specialists;
- interior contractors;
- local installers.
A clear responsibility matrix helps prevent assumptions about who supplies each component and who performs each connection.
For a shell-only or partially completed pod project, the manufacturing package should identify what is included, what is excluded and which physical provisions must be completed before shipment.
This approach gives buyers the flexibility to combine factory manufacturing with locally sourced systems while keeping the interface requirements visible from the design stage.

- A CAD, STEP or dimensioned design reference.
- The intended use of the pod.
- The destination country.
- The required shell size and external form.
- A list of required cutouts and mounting locations.
